Unlike the Great Blue Heron, the Great Egret is a seasonal Bay resident from Spring through Autumn. During the winter months transient Eagles can also be found throughout the entire Delmarva peninsula. A few years ago a flock began wintering at the refuge and has returned ever since. The "Marsh Hawk," as they are sometimes colloquially referred to, has been known to hide within the marsh and pounce on prey species. I had been photographing this bird a few hours before sunset but it had disappeared into the refuge soon afterwards. A type of wetland grass, this particular plants provides excellent protection along the shorelines of the Chesapeake. It winters in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed where they can be seen in flocks foraging amongst grasslands. A ground dwelling species, males leave for their Arctic nesting grounds in March and April to find and defend prime nesting habitat. These trees are more common in the Western and Northern part of the watershed though they are in peril. An exotic beetle from Asia, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, is decimating ancient strands of this beautiful tree. In Shenandoah National Park the majority of its Hemlocks are now gone due to this pest. Because the watershed houses over 17 million inhabitants, with many of them living in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area, it is inevitable that wildlife will suffer even during something seemingly innocuous as fishing. This cormorant choked to death after feeding on a fishing lure that was not retrieved by its user. This a well traveled road that leads to a fishing lake in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area. Behind the deer the road rises to the top of a business development area where a local food bank sits to support needy people. Mostly nocturnal, evidence of Beavers can be found throughout the Watershed with fallen trees and beaver dams. Nearly wiped out because of the fur trade beaver populations began making a comeback in the area in the 1970's. However their dams can clog up storm-water pipes, which are areas beavers will take up residence in. This unfortunately can flood roads. Most people are not aware that Bobcats may live in their area, as they are very elusive and wary of humans. This conifer is more common in eastern and central Canada as well as the Northeastern United States. However it is found in pockets in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed on high peaks of the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virgina. This law led to a 32% reduction in nitrogen-oxide from coal-fired power-plants. However a Peregrine Falcon flew overhead causing the bird to crouch and become silent. Peregrine Falcons have been reintroduced to much of their former range, including the Blue Ridge Mountains, after populations were decimated by the use of the pesticide DDT. He did not take to the local blue herons very kindly as he would normally displace them if they came too close to his new-found territory. While glacier's did not extend this far south, the glacier's in nearby Pennsylvania fostered a much cooler climate resulting in the tundra like appearance of these mountain peaks. The Watershed's boundaries in West Virginia represent some of the most extreme, cool, and wet climate in the east. These are wild animals. Unfortunately visitors to the area are bitten and kicked every year after venturing too close. The horses have also learned how to open up tents to steal food and will attempt to stick their heads into cars to accept handouts. The wetlands in the Coastal Bays formed as a result of sediment accretion as it grew above sea level. Its form has changed due to the movement of sand on the land facing side of the island. At one time it was even connected to Fenwick Island until a Hurricane in 1933 separated them. However as the climate warms and sea level rises the increase of overwash could eventually destroy the entire island. During Hurricane Sandy none of the famed Wild Horses were killed. The Sika Deer, a species of Elk from East Asia, was released in this area in 1916. They are not an invasive species because they do not compete with native wildlife for food and habitat. They are inhabitants of the loblolly pine forest but may be seen amongst the marshes of both the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays Watersheds. Over 10 distinct vocalizations have been recorded, including alarm calls and communication between mothers and their young. Such was the case here when a curious yearling approached me from within a loblolly pine forest and her mother called for her to return. Reintroduced in 1913, these Elk are actually of the Rocky Mountain Subspecies, but are wild and free. At one time the watershed was home to other mega-fauna as well: Bison, Timber Wolf, and Mountain Lion. All have since been extripated. While seeing Elk in the Rocky Mountain West is always exciting with the granite spheres and numerous game species, there is a quality to seeing the rut from within the fog of the Appalachians. The forest is floored with ferns. There is a Thoreau-like quality to this land. It is peaceful. Unless you are chased by a testosterone filled bull Elk. While Black Bear, Coyotes, and Bobcats make their home in these forest it is the Bull Elk that rules this land. It is an awesome sight to behold. Augmented by the bugle, the natural soundscapes to these battles creates a sensory overload filled with drama. All three sounds are beautiful in their memorable, haunting crescendo. My friend who introduced me to the Elk warned me that once you hear the bugle it'll grab you and never let you go. He was right and I'm better off for it.
